Background of the Study
Yoruba proverbs are integral to the cultural heritage of Abeokuta, encapsulating wisdom, values, and historical experiences. The etymological origins of these proverbs offer insights into the evolution of the Yoruba language and its interaction with neighboring cultures. Many proverbs are believed to have roots in ancient oral traditions, reflecting the socio-political and economic contexts of their time (Adeyemi, 2023). This study investigates the origins of selected Yoruba proverbs by analyzing their linguistic components, semantic shifts, and cultural references. The research draws on historical texts, oral literature, and comparative linguistics to trace how these proverbs have been shaped by migrations, trade, and intercultural exchanges. Understanding the etymology of proverbs not only enriches our knowledge of Yoruba language history but also aids in preserving cultural identity in the face of globalization (Oluwatobi, 2024; Babatunde, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the cultural importance of Yoruba proverbs, their etymological origins remain poorly documented. In Abeokuta, the rapid modernization and loss of oral traditions threaten the transmission of this knowledge (Adeyemi, 2023). The lack of systematic research on the origins of these proverbs limits our understanding of their historical context and linguistic evolution. This study aims to address this gap by exploring the etymological roots of Yoruba proverbs, thereby contributing to cultural preservation and academic research (Oluwatobi, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To trace the etymological origins of selected Yoruba proverbs.
To analyze semantic and cultural influences on proverb evolution.
To document historical contexts influencing proverb formation.
Research Questions:
What are the linguistic origins of Yoruba proverbs in Abeokuta?
How have cultural and historical factors shaped these proverbs?
What methodologies best uncover their etymological roots?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it deepens understanding of Yoruba cultural heritage through the etymological analysis of proverbs. The findings will enhance linguistic scholarship and contribute to preserving traditional wisdom in Abeokuta (Adeyemi, 2023; Babatunde, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
